WW2 US Naval Training Center in Sampson, NY. Paper and Photo Grouping (4). The base was authorized in 1942 and after paying out farms and other home to owners to obtain 2535 acres of land the camp was built in 270 days at a cost of $56 Million, located on the shores of Seneca Lake, NY. it was an ideal location having a deep water lake to do Naval Training there.
The lot consists of an original 1944 dated graduating class photo with several sailors holding Thompson’s, this is very uncommon as all the other similar photos I have seen never show them holding any weapons. The photo measures 8 inches by 10 inches approximately and in excellent condition. The second item is a personal phot of the sailor in a cardboard holder which would have been mailed home form the base measuring 5 inches by 7.5 inches approximately and in excellent condition. The third item is a copy of the Bases News paper – The Sampson News also dated 1944 in excellent used condition and finally an original WW2 large jacket patch of the bases insignia and name measuring 5.5 inches in diameter approximately and being made of printed wool (I believe), also in excellent un-used condition.
